Where it works

  • Hospitals

Supplies, mail, records and medication through halls and elevators.

  • Warehouses

Pallets, cartons and totes moved without a forklift.

  • Plants

Parts, dies and tooling between work cells.

  • Mailrooms

Mail and parcels on daily rounds through offices and campuses.

Choose a motorized cart by the load it carries, the deck it needs, the floors and ramps on the route and how long it runs between charges. Send us those and we confirm the model before you order.

Load capacity

Standard platform carts carry 1,000 to 4,000 lb on one deck. Double deck and mailroom carts carry up to 1,500 lb. Carts built to order go much higher, up to 30,000 lb on a heavy platform cart and 40,000 lb on a transfer cart.

Weigh your heaviest single load and choose a cart rated above it, so the cart is not running at its limit every shift.

Deck and cart type

The deck has to hold the whole load. Standard platform decks run from 24 by 32 inches up to 34.5 by 52 inches.

Choose a mailroom cart for baskets of mail and files, a double deck cart for a second shelf, a scissor lift cart when the load has to be raised to working height, and a custom cart when the load is long, very heavy or an odd shape.

Ramps and floors

Check the steepest ramp before anything else. The 1031 and 1032 platform carts are limited to 6 degree inclines, while the 1040-E series climbs 12 or 15 degrees with 1,000 lb on board. The carts stop and hold when the operator lets go, so plan for the slope where the cart will park.

Batteries and charging

Most standard carts run on AGM batteries with a built in charger that plugs into a 120 or 240 volt outlet. The Pony Express platform carts run about 8 hours per charge and recharge in about 4 hours. Mailroom, utility and lift carts are rated by range, from 5 to 15 miles per charge. Heavy custom carts can carry swappable AGM or lithium packs for multi shift work.

What to send for a quote

  • The weight and size of the heaviest load
  • The steepest ramp on the route and the floor surface
  • Door widths and the elevator car size, if the route has one
  • Photos of the load, and your delivery ZIP code

We check the route against what you send and come back with a written quote for the cart, options, freight and build time.

Questions

What is the difference between a motorized cart and an electric tugger?

A motorized cart carries one load on its own deck. A tugger tows wheeled carts behind it on a hitch. The platform cart owner manual says not to use the cart to push or pull other carts, so a train of carts is a tugger job.

Can a motorized cart lift the load?

A platform cart carries the load at floor level. A scissor lift cart raises it. The 1050-EL lifts 1,000 lb from 18.5 to 64 inches, and the 1052 lifts 2,000 or 2,500 lb with up to 48 inches of travel.

How fast do motorized carts go?

At walking pace. Most run up to 3 mph in a high range, with a low range of about 1.5 mph for tight spaces.

Can you build a cart for an unusual load?

Yes. Carts built to order range from crash and medication carts to die carts and transfer carts. Send us a photo of the load and its weight.

How much can a motorized cart carry?

From 300 lb on the ToolCaddy maintenance cart up to 10,000 lb on the remote controlled WagonCaddyHD platform cart. Most Pony Express platform, utility and linen carts carry 1,000 to 2,000 lb, the 1032 series up to 4,000 lb, and the scissor lift carts lift 1,000 to 2,500 lb.

How do I get a price?

Call us or send the form. Tell us what you move, the route and your ZIP. We send a written quote with the machine, freight and build time.

How does it arrive?

Most machines go by freight truck from the factory. Parts and smaller items can go by FedEx or UPS. Freight to your ZIP is on your quote before you order. Rush and overnight shipping cost extra. We sell and ship to US addresses only.

What warranty comes with it?

EK Tech covers Pony Express tuggers for 2 years on the frame and drive and 1 year on other parts. For DJ Products and Autoquip equipment, ask us.
