Buying guide
A custom cart starts from a proven powered drive. What changes is everything above it, the deck size, the capacity, the lift, the shelving, the locking and how the operator drives it.
Which build fits the job
Heavy loads across a plant floor call for a transfer cart, up to 40,000 lb on rails or steerable wheels, or the AC Vector platform cart, built from 10,000 to 30,000 lb. Tooling in and out of a press calls for a die cart, listed up to 6,000 lb. Bar stock, pipe and panels go on a long deck cart, up to 5,000 lb on decks typically 12 to 18 feet long.
In hospitals, a med pass is a medication cart, a scope tower is an endoscopy cart, code supplies call for a crash cart and pharmacy distribution is a pharmacy cart. A retrofit kit can also motorize a manual cart you already own.
A real example
One plant needed a picking cart that would stop workers pushing material across the floor. The build added a gravity conveyor, a removable front post for faster unloading, fixed rear posts with a steel plate, and a cup holder and document pocket for long shifts. That is the level of detail a custom cart is built to.
Controls and safety
Controls can be on the handle, a pendant, two stations or a wireless remote. Safety options include collision detection, accordion skirting around lifts, safety edging at pinch points, on board scales that stop overloading and magnetic docking that lines the cart up the same way each time.
Power
Standard builds run on AGM batteries with an on board charger. Lithium iron phosphate batteries are available, and the heaviest carts take swappable 48 volt AGM or lithium packs so a charged pack goes in while the other charges.
What to send for a quote
- What you move, its weight and its size
- The route, including door widths, elevators and ramps
- How the operator needs to control the cart
- Photos or drawings of the load and the work area
We check the route against what you send and come back with a written quote for the cart, options, freight and build time.
Questions
Can you motorize a cart we already own?
Often, yes. A retrofit kit adds a powered drive to tool carts, laundry bins, security linen carts and utility carts. Send us photos and dimensions and we confirm the fit.
Can a custom cart lift or turn the load?
Yes. Die carts lift to bolster height, transfer carts can lift, tilt or rotate, and scissor lift carts take rotating, conveyor and ball transfer tops.
Can it be built for wash down or clean areas?
Stainless steel and aluminum frames are available, with NEMA or IP rated enclosures for the electronics.
Can a medical cart lock?
Yes. Locking runs from individual drawer locks and column locks to an electronic keypad with a PIN code or a proximity card reader.
