Buying guide
Pick a platform cart by the heaviest single load, the deck that holds it, the steepest ramp on the route and the shift it has to run. Send us those and we confirm the model before you order.
Load capacity
The Pony Express 1040 and 1040-E carry 1,000 lb. The 1031 series carries 1,500 or 2,000 lb and the 1032 series 3,000 or 4,000 lb. The PartsCaddy carries 2,000 lb, the WagonCaddy 3,000 lb and the remote controlled WagonCaddyHD up to 10,000 lb.
Choose a cart rated above your heaviest load. For loads past these ratings, see the custom engineered carts, built up to 30,000 lb.
Deck size and height
The load should sit fully on the deck. The 1040 has a 24 by 32 inch deck at 12 inches. The 1040-E series runs from 24 by 32 up to 34.5 by 52 inches at 12 or 15 inches. The 1031 series comes 25.5 inches wide in 40, 49 and 61 inch lengths, or 34.5 by 52 inches, all at 11.5 inches. The 1032 uses the 34.5 by 52 inch deck.
A shorter deck turns and parks in less space and fits smaller elevators, so choose the shortest deck that holds the load.
Ramps and steering
The 1031 and 1032 are limited to 6 degree inclines and the 1040 to 3 degrees at full load. The 1040-E series climbs 15 degrees with 1,000 lb, or 12 degrees on the long 1040-LE.
The 1031 and 1032 use center wheel drive, which turns tighter than a front wheel drive cart in crowded aisles.
Batteries and charging
Pony Express platform carts run about 8 hours per charge on 35 or 44 Ah AGM batteries, and the built in charger refills them in about 4 hours from a 120 or 240 volt outlet. The PartsCaddy and WagonCaddy run on 36 volt systems of three batteries with an automatic charger.
What to send for a quote
- The weight and footprint of the heaviest load
- The steepest ramp on the route and the floor surface
- Door widths and the elevator car size, if the route has one
- Your delivery ZIP code
We check the route against what you send and come back with a written quote for the cart, options, freight and build time.
Questions
Can a platform cart lift the load?
No. Platform carts carry the load at deck height. To raise a load to working height, use a scissor lift cart.
Can a platform cart pull other carts?
No. The owner manual for the 1031, 1032 and 1040 says not to use the cart to push or pull other carts. Towing a train of carts is a job for an electric tugger.
Can the carts run outdoors or in wet areas?
The owner manual says not to operate the 1031, 1032 and 1040 in wet environments or over curbs. Tell us about the route and we suggest a cart built for it.
How do we stop unauthorized use?
The Pony Express platform carts have a keyed power switch. Take the key out and the cart will not run.
How do I get a price?
Call us or send the form. Tell us what you move, the route and your ZIP. We send a written quote with the machine, freight and build time.
How does it arrive?
Most machines go by freight truck from the factory. Parts and smaller items can go by FedEx or UPS. Freight to your ZIP is on your quote before you order. Rush and overnight shipping cost extra. We sell and ship to US addresses only.
What warranty comes with it?
EK Tech covers Pony Express tuggers for 2 years on the frame and drive and 1 year on other parts. For DJ Products and Autoquip equipment, ask us.
